Shanghai Corners
Block Prints By Nicholas Brown

The Artist and the Process

I've been a professional artist for over 30 years, creating paintings, prints, drawings and photographs inspired by my surroundings and exhibiting around the US and in China. Currently residing in Shanghai, I continue to draw inspiration from the street life and historical architecture found here. My main artist website can be found at nicholasbrown.com

Linocut prints are similar to wood block prints, but linoleum is carved instead of wood. First, the image is drawn onto the block and then the non-inked shapes are carved away, leaving the raised surfaces to be covered in ink by rolling it on with a brayer. Paper is then placed on the block and then hand cranked through a press to transfer the ink from the block onto the paper.

All prints on Shanghai Corners are printed on archival, 250 gram Rives BFK cotton paper with professional printmaking ink. All of the prints are the same size; 12 inches by 9 inches on 15 by 11 inch paper. Each print comes signed by the artist and individually numbered with its place in the edition.

The tools of the trade; a carved linoleum block, carving tools, a press and a brayer.
